The lovely playwrite and dramaturge, Jennifer Chaney gathered a few actors, board members and her production team so she could hear her script come to life.
What better setting than IN the actual Sylvia Beach hotel?
She then spent the night at the hotel and worked well into the dark and stormy night on a few revisions.
Those in attendance were able to fully immerse themselves in the experience. The lights flickered, the wind howled...and a door slammed!
The ambiance was only heightened by mulled cider and delectable cookies with tea supplied by the Table of Contents, Sylvia Beach hotel's appropriately named restaurant.
There were many moments of surprised laughter as the actors read their parts superbly.
The actors had palpable chemistry, in light of some having met one another for the first time that day! They are enthusiastically awaiting for the announcement of open auditions.
Will YOU be one of them?
Auditions slated for ‘Spirits of Sylvia Beach’
Actors ages 18 to 99 are invited to audition for the Porthole Players’ production of “Spirits of Sylvia Beach,” a debut comedy, at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 10, in the lobby of the Newport Performing Arts Center.
Director Morgan Locklear and assistant director Sean Orton will conduct the auditions, along with producer Jennifer Locklear. The play is scheduled to run Sept. 6 through Sept. 22 at the Newport Performing Arts Center.
“Spirits of Sylvia Beach” takes place at the hotel of the same name, just down the road from the PAC. Written by local playwright and Porthole Board member Jennifer Chaney, this farce follows Lucy, a writer who works at the hotel and is visited by the famous spirits that dwell within.
No preparation is needed for auditions. Selected scenes will be supplied to the actors. Anyone interested in assisting with set construction, costuming or technical assistance is also invited to attend the auditions and submit information for future contact. Participants are asked to subscribe to the Porthole Players digital newsletter (at no cost!)
